John Gerrard

What first inspired you to try art?

Something to do, I suppose! I have my parents to thank for putting me into acting. Although, my earliest memory is doing paper mache. It really became a big part of my identity when I played in bands as a teenager. It’s hard for me to put into words what inspires me to make art. Sometimes I think compulsion is a better word!

Was there ever a moment you wanted to quit art all together, and if so what brought passion and inspiration back?

I’ve never felt like quitting all together. I like to have different styles to bounce around with which helps to keep things interesting.

Have you gone to art school or are you self taught? If you’re self taught what resources or exercises did you use to learn?

I went to ACAD, now AU.

What is the most challenging part about being an artist for you? How did you overcome that challenge?

Probably the financial aspect. Sometimes the ups and downs are exciting, but other times I wish I had a steady pay check. Some artists choose to work other jobs, which is understandable. It can take the pressure off and open up your practice. It doesn’t make you any less of an artist if you’re not “full time”

What does art mean to you?

Art is a way for me to make my mark on this world. It’s a tool I use to understand myself and the world around me better.

What would you recommend to new artists trying to build a career? What are the keys to success?

Carve your own path. Try not to compare yourself to others. Do your best to get into art college. It’s not the only path, but it’s a good way of learning the art world and what sort of options there are. Creatively and career wise.

What would you go back and tell your younger artistic self if you could?

It’s worth it!

Where do you see yourself in the future? What are some of your goals?

I would like to get into making murals. Make work that I want to make without worrying about sticking to any certain style. I've just started work on my second book, so finishing that is a goal. Ultimately, it's more important to me to make an impact by sharing my mental health story. Art is one of the ways I can do that.

What drives the inspiration in your paintings? How would you describe your style?

Trying to make something unique. Make something that is complex but also palatable. I like the tension between order and chaos. My style varies, but I tend to make a lot of pieces with multiples. Pieces that have a lot of different elements.
